The STP Code (Temporarily Present Foreigner) is an individual regional code indicated on a card issued to foreign citizens who do not comply with the rules on entry and residence in Italy, so that they can access the SSN in the manner described on the page types of access to the SSN.
It can be issued by the Local health authorities (ASL), the Hospitals, the University Hospitals and the Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (IRCCS).
The STP code is an identification code consisting of 16 characters:
- 3 characters for the STP code;
- 3 characters for the ISTAT code related to the Region;
- 3 characters for the ISTAT code of the ASL that attributes the code;
- 7 digits for the internal progressive number attributed at the time of issue.
Characteristics of the STP code:
- it is valid for 6 months;
- it is renewable in the event of residence in the country;
- it is valid throughout Italy.
The STP code is used for:
- medical prescriptions, on the regional prescription form, of treatments and medicines (upon presentation of a medical prescription, made on the regional prescription form and indicating the STP code, the foreign national irregularly staying can obtain the pharmaceutical provision at all the pharmacies in agreement with the SSN, like citizens registered with the National Health Service);
- recording the care provided;
- statement for reimbursement.
